When American citizens wish to apply for a Green Card for their foreign spouse, they must fill in and submit Form I-130A.

What is Form I-130A for?

Form I-130A, or Supplemental Information for Spouse Beneficiary, is a document used for the U.S. family immigration process. It accompanies Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) when a U.S. citizen or permanent resident applies for a Green Card for their foreign spouse.

This document is specifically designed to collect additional information about the beneficiary spouse, including their employment and residency history. Unlike Form I-130, which is completed by the petitioner (the U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse), Form I-130A must be completed by the foreign beneficiary. The form is of course in English, so the beneficiary’s American spouse or another English speaker may need to assist them with filling in the form if they are not fluent in English.

Why is this document important?

Form I-130A allows U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to verify the authenticity of the marriage and assess the beneficiary’s eligibility for a Green Card. It plays a crucial role in proving the legitimacy of the relationship and preventing immigration fraud.

What to do if you require an interpreter to assist with completing the form

If you have used an interpreter to help your spouse understand and fill in Form I-130A, the interpreter’s contact information, certification, and signature must be included in Part 5 of the form (see below).

How Can HI-COM Help You with Form I-130A?

If you are an American citizen based in Shanghai, and you require an interpreter to help your spouse understand and fill in Form I-130A, then HI-COM can assist. Our interpreter will also fully fill in and sign Part 5 of Form I-130A, serving as proof that a certified interpreter assisted in the process – making it official and valid.

So don’t hesitate to contact HI-COM if you need assistance with this process!

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of must-see events in China, especially if you’re interested in any of these topics. Of course, there are all kinds of trade fairs in this country, which is constantly expanding into every market there is.

Why go to a trade show?

Taking part in a trade show is a key strategy for developing your business, and this takes on an even greater dimension in China, a rapidly expanding market rich in opportunities. First and foremost, a trade show enables you to meet potential partners directly – customers, suppliers or distributors – in an environment conducive to exchange. In China, where business relationships are largely based on “guanxi” (network and connections), establishing face-to-face contact is crucial to building trust and fostering long-term collaborations.

Secondly, these events offer an exceptional showcase for testing and promoting products or services to a diverse and often international audience. As the world’s second-largest economy, China boasts a large concentration of buyers, leading companies and innovators, making these shows a must for capturing the attention of new markets.

Finally, taking part in a trade show in China also enables us to keep abreast of global and local trends, by closely observing the competition, technological innovations and the behavior of Chinese consumers, who are increasingly influencing global standards.

In short, these events are not just business opportunities, but real springboards for establishing a strategic presence in a market as demanding as it is promising.

How does a trade show work?

A trade show in China takes place in several stages, each requiring meticulous preparation to maximize its effectiveness.

On arrival at the show, participants go through a registration process at the entrance, which is often made easier if you have previously booked online. You then receive an access badge that allows you to move around the various exhibition halls.

Next, the show is generally organized around thematic zones, where each exhibitor has a personalized stand to present its products or services. As a visitor, you can schedule appointments with exhibitors or simply explore the stands freely to discover unexpected opportunities.

During the day, conferences and workshops are often organized alongside the main exhibition. These sessions offer an excellent opportunity to deepen your knowledge of market trends, meet experts and sometimes even interact with them directly. The majority of discussions on the stands take place in Mandarin, making the presence of an interpreter essential to communicate effectively and avoid any misunderstandings.

Finally, a great deal of work takes place behind the scenes. Informal networking moments, such as on-site lunches or cocktails at the end of the day, are crucial (especially in China, where interpersonal relationships play a key role in business).

At the end of the day, a quick assessment of the contacts made enables you to plan immediate follow-ups, which are often necessary to maintain the business momentum generated on site.

Taking part in a trade show in China is much more than visiting stands: it’s a complete immersion in a dynamic business ecosystem rich in opportunities.

What use is an interpreter at such events?

Taking part in a trade show in China is not always easy when you don’t speak the language, especially when you’re going there to talk business and meet exhibitors face-to-face.

Finding an interpreter at a trade show in China is therefore an essential step in ensuring smoother exchanges, especially in a country where language and cultural codes can be barriers.

In fact, Chinese people rarely speak English (let alone French), which makes it difficult for foreigners to understand each other both inside and outside the show. So it’s important to find an interpreter who is available to accompany you even after the event.

The interpreter doesn’t just translate your conversations; he or she becomes a real bridge between you and your Chinese interlocutors. Before the show, he or she can help you book a cab, or pick you up directly for a more personal approach. This way, you’ll be ready for action as soon as you arrive.

Once on site, he’ll help you navigate the show, whether it’s understanding instructions, reading brochures or locating key stands. During discussions with exhibitors or visitors, he or she will be able to translate not only words, but also cultural nuances, avoiding misunderstandings that could jeopardize a business opportunity.

Throughout the day, the interpreter can also accompany you to conferences and workshops to help you make the most of the content, which is often exclusively in Mandarin. They can also act as mediators, helping you to present your products or services convincingly, while respecting local cultural expectations and sensitivities.

Finally, at the end of the day, a good interpreter can help you summarize and organize the key information gathered, facilitating effective follow-up with your contacts.

The interpreter is not only there to assist you at the show. As mentioned earlier, they can also accompany you outside the show to help you better understand the environment (like a cab), or they can accompany you on a factory tour to help you understand the manufacturer’s explanations and make appointments with suppliers.

In short, an interpreter is much more than a translator: he or she is an indispensable ally in optimizing your presence at the show.

Events calendar

Finally, here’s a calendar of the upcoming trade shows mentioned earlier, during which you may need an interpreter.

Succeeding in Business in China: Culture, Negotiations, and Etiquette at CIIE Shanghai

China is one of the most dynamic markets in the world, but doing business there requires a good understanding of cultural differences. To succeed at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, it is important to understand these nuances, know how to negotiate skillfully and adopt the right behaviors to avoid misunderstandings.

Entering the Chinese market: 10 Things Brands Must Do – HI-COM

Understanding Cultural Differences in Business in China

Business culture in China is strongly influenced by values such as hierarchy, respect, and harmony. At the CIIE, these values are translated in several ways:

  1. Respect for hierarchy:

Hierarchy is very important in China. Decisions are often made by leaders after much discussion. In business meetings, it is crucial to recognize titles and show respect to those in high positions.

  1. The importance of the “face” (“Mianzi”):

Protecting “face” is essential in China. This means avoiding embarrassing someone or criticizing them publicly. At the CIIE, it is important to express yourself in a way that avoids making others lose face, as this could damage the relationship.

  1. Guanxi (connections):

The term “Guanxi” refers to the importance of personal relationships and networking in business. At the CIIE, having good “guanxi” can be crucial to securing partnerships. This requires taking the time to get to know your contacts, building a relationship of trust, and showing a genuine interest in their culture and their company.

Tips for Negotiations with Chinese Partners at the CIIE – Interpreting

Negotiations in China can be very different from those in the West. Here are some tips for successful discussions at the CIIE:

  1. Preparation and patience: Negotiations in China are often long and detailed. It is more or less essential to negotiate! It is important to be well-prepared with clear information and solid arguments. Patience is essential, as decisions can take time.
  2. Indirect communication: Unlike the direct negotiation styles often used in the West, the Chinese prefer subtle and indirect communication. The answers can be nuanced, and you have to know how to read between the lines. A “yes” can sometimes mean “maybe,” and a silence can be a chance to clarify or suggest something else.
  3. Using interpreters: If you are not fluent in Chinese, a good interpreter is essential. It is not just about translating the words, but also about understanding cultural subtleties, which can greatly influence successful negotiation at the CIIE.
  4. Providing value and making compromises: Show that you are ready to seek win-win solutions. Chinese partners value compromises and agreements that bring long-term benefits to both sides. This approach can increase your chances of success at the CIIE.

The Eight Elements of Chinese-Style Negotiation

Etiquette and Behavior to Adopt during the CIIE

Etiquette is essential in Chinese business culture. Here are some rules to follow to make a good impression at the CIIE:

  • Business cards: Business cards are exchanged at the beginning of each meeting. Always have enough and present them with both hands, with the text facing the person. Take a few seconds to look at the card you received before putting it away. This shows respect.

Pro tip: Add your QR code WeChat on the business card.

  • Greetings and gestures: A handshake is common, but a slight nod is also appreciated to show respect. Avoid touching people or pointing fingers as this can be perceived as rude.
  • Punctuality: Being on time is a sign of respect in China. Arriving on time or a little early for your appointments at the CIIE is important for making a good impression.
  • Dress code: Wear professional, conservative clothing. Appearance matters a lot in China, as it reflects professionalism and seriousness.

How to Avoid Cultural Misunderstandings at CIIE?

Even with good preparation, cultural misunderstandings can occur. Here are some strategies to avoid them:

Take the time to listen carefully and write down the nonverbal reactions. Facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice can give clues about what your partners are thinking.

A good interpreter, who knows the language and culture well, can help you avoid communication errors. They can clarify misunderstandings and advise you on the best way to respond.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to ask questions. This shows that you are involved and want to understand expectations.

Showing that you are open and respectful of local practices is essential to avoid misunderstandings. Be prepared to adapt the way you communicate and learn from the exchanges.

By understanding cultural differences, mastering negotiations, and respecting CIIE etiquette, professionals can avoid cultural mistakes and build strong and fruitful relationships with their Chinese partners. The main and easiest strategy to get it right is to get help with professional Interpreting for the CIIE.

Interpreting and Translation Services at CIIE: Why and How to Choose the Best?

Why are professional interpreting services important for the CIIE?

The CIIE is a global event that brings together participants from different cultures and languages. Professional interpreting services are essential to ensure your messages are clear, precise, and respect cultural nuances.

1. Facilitating multilingual communication:

Most Chinese professionals prefer to speak in Mandarin, especially for important negotiations. A professional interpreter ensures that nothing is lost in translation, whether it’s technical terms, business propositions, or cultural nuances. This is crucial when negotiating contracts, presenting products, or talking to government officials and executives.

2. Improve networking opportunities:

The CIIE offers many networking opportunities where every conversation can open the door to new opportunities. Having an interpreter on site makes exchanges more fluid and allows you to focus on building strong relationships, without worrying about the language barrier.

3. Building trust and credibility:

By investing in professional interpreting services, you show your potential partners that you are committed to communicating clearly and conducting business in a transparent and respectful manner. This builds trust and gives credibility to your approach.

How do you choose a good interpreter for the CIIE?

Choosing the right interpreter for the CIIE is a strategic decision that can influence the success of your participation.

Here are the criteria to take into account to make the best choice:

– Competence and Experience in the Sector: Not all interpreters are equal. It is crucial to choose an interpreter who has expertise in your industry. For example, an interpreter with experience in the technology, healthcare, or finance sectors will be better able to understand and correctly translate the specific terminologies and nuances of those industries.

– Bilingualism and Cultural Competence: The interpreter must have perfect mastery of both the source and target languages. This is essential to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure that the tone and intentions of messages are correctly interpreted. Look for interpreters who have lived or worked in both cultures.

– Types of interpreting Services Offered: At the CIIE you may need: different types of interpreting, such as simultaneous, consecutive interpreting or liaison, depending on the context (conferences, B2B meetings, presentations). Make sure the interpreter you choose is competent in the type(s) of service required and has the necessary equipment if needed (headsets, microphones, booths, etc.).

– Professionalism and Flexibility: The CIIE is a dynamic event where meetings and discussions can sometimes extend or move to another location. It is essential to choose an interpreter who is not only professional and punctual, but also flexible to accommodate the changing needs of your schedule.

– Cost and Value: Although cost is an important factor, it is crucial to consider the value that the interpreter brings. Choosing a cheaper but less competent interpreter can be costly in terms of missed business opportunities  or misunderstandings.

– Availability for Prior Preparations: It is often beneficial to work with an interpreter who can prepare with you in advance. Whether it is to familiarize yourself with the specific vocabulary of your sector, or to understand the objectives of your meetings, this preparation can greatly improve the efficiency of interactions at the CIIE.

By following these tips, you will be well equipped to choose an interpreter who not only facilitates communication at the CIIE, but also helps strengthen your presence and success in the Chinese market.

A good interpreting service is an investment that can generate significant returns in terms of business partnerships and long-term growth.

The international event, which took place on June 26, 2024 in Shanghai, focused on investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia.

#1 Gala Dinner: Exploring Saudi Arabia

The gala dinner included a video exploring Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2023, highlighting the country’s positioning as a global logistics hub, foreign investment experiences and initiatives to stimulate regional economic development.

#2 Activities: Introduction to Invest Saudi

The day began with a series of presentations detailing investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia. Experts discussed the Invest Saudi program, past Saudi investment successes, government initiatives to facilitate investment, particularly in Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and the role of strategic premium residences in attracting investors. These discussions set the scene for two panels moderated by Abdullmalik Alzuhairi, exploring respectively the efforts of government entities to stimulate investment and the future prospects of the private sector in logistics and transportation in Saudi Arabia.

During this event, our interpreters worked as a team to maintain optimum performance and accuracy. They used specialized ASR booths and state-of-the-art headsets to ensure real-time translation. We were honored to provide simultaneous interpreting services at the 2nd VDMA Industry Future Fit Conference, focusing on the impact of AI in production. Our team enhanced the English to Chinese and Chinese to English interpreting for attendees by providing 180 headsets, ensuring that participants could fully engage with the conference material.

This major international conference, held on June 4th, 2024, focused on the impact of AI in production. The conference brought together experts and industry leaders to discuss the latest developments and applications of AI in manufacturing. Key topics included political and economic exchanges between China and Germany, next-generation AI applications in manufacturing, and AI’s role in enhancing productivity.

During the event, our interpreters worked in pairs, taking turns to maintain optimal performance and accuracy. They operated from specialized ASR booths and used state-of-the-art headsets to deliver real-time translation. The audience had access to the interpreting via headphones, with alternating English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation depending on the speaker. This setup ensured a smooth and uninterrupted flow of information.

Simultaneous and conference interpreting involves interpreters listening to the speaker and translating what is being spoken in real-time to the audience. This is in contrast to consecutive interpreting, where interpreters translate during pauses in speaking. A conference or simultaneous interpreting setup involves interpreters in specialized automatic speech recognition (ASR) booths and headset devices with live audio of the simultaneous translation.

Based on the type of event, it is possible that simultaneous interpreting isn’t the right fit for you. Learn about consecutive interpreting and the difference between both to make the righ choice!

Live interpreting services: a major asset

What is consecutive interpreting?

There are several types of interpreting, but in this case, it’s consecutive interpreting that’s best suited to this event.

Consecutive interpreting involves transmitting a message from one language to another once the speaker has spoken. An expert linguist listens to a speaker in a given language and translates the message into the target language for the other participants while preserving the meaning and idea. Consecutive interpreting therefore takes place behind the speaker’s speech.

Why is interpreting the key to success at the Canton Fair?

Breaking the language barrier

Communication is the key to success in any business interaction. At the Canton Fair, where participants from all over the world meet, the language barrier can represent a major obstacle. This difficulty is overcome by interpreting, which allows the parties to concentrate on the idea and content rather than struggling with language difficulties.

  • Establish lasting relationships: Build a relationship of trust with your customers and partners based on open and transparent communication.

Interpreting as a strategic asset

Virtually all formal communications contain important messages that need to be communicated in a correct and culturally acceptable form. The way a message is accepted in different languages can make or break an agreement or negotiation.

Here are just a few examples of the added value of an interpreter:

  • Understanding cultural nuances: The interpreter can help you understand cultural differences and avoid misunderstandings.
  • Adapting your message: The interpreter can adapt your message to the culture and expectations of your interlocutor.
  • Facilitating negotiations: The interpreter can help you find common ground and mutually beneficial agreements.

Whether you are closing an international deal, creating business partnerships abroad, or negotiating, it is no secret that effective communication between languages is important in your success. Language barriers can stop important business deals, partnerships, and negotiations. This is where interpreting plays an important role.

Around 1 in every 4 U.S. employers could not pursue or lost business due to a lack of language skills. These statistics show us how important correct multilingual communication is for your business and the global economy.

In this article, we explore the art of interpreting, why you need it when navigating multilingual interactions, the types of interpreting, and which type of interpreting is best suited for your needs.

Discover how a reliable and professional interpreting service will help you cross language gaps and create successful cross-cultural business deals.

What is interpreting?

Interpreting is the practice of conveying a message from one language to another in real-time. It is done by the interpreter, an expert linguist who listens to a speaker in a particular language and seamlessly translates the message into the target language for the other participants.

Some examples of situations where an interpreter is needed are speeches where the audience is multilingual, international business meetings, medical or legal communications, etc.

In any of these cases, conveying information in a correct and culturally acceptable form is vital in successful communication between the parties, and an interpreter acts as a middleman for this communication.

Why interpreting is important in multilingual interactions.

Overcoming language difficulties. When working in a multilingual environment, language barriers may negatively affect communication by not allowing the correct exchange of ideas. This challenge is overcome by interpreting, which allows the parties to focus on the idea and the content rather than struggling with language difficulties.

Conveying accurate information. Virtually all formal communication has important messages that need to be communicated in a correct and culturally acceptable form. The way a message is accepted across different languages can make or break a deal or negotiation, so when you choose a professional interpreting service, you ensure that your communication is as smooth as possible. The interpreter plays a vital role in ensuring smooth communication by actively listening to the speaker and effectively translating the message into the target language.

Types of Interpreting

We can categorize interpreting in the following two ways:

  1. Location-based Categorization: Remote and On-site Interpreting
  2. Method-based Categorization: Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpreting

Location-based: Based on location, there are two types of interpreting: remote and on-site. If the meeting or event is being held online, then the best approach is to use a remote interpreter, who will sit in the meeting and interpret the information between the parties. Remote interpreting is usually needed in webinars and online meetings. In on-site interpreting, the interpreter will be present at the location alongside the participants of the meeting. On-site interpreting is needed in seminars and in-person meetings.

Method-based: There are two types of interpreting:

  1. Simultaneous: Simultaneous interpreting is usually used in settings that include a larger group of participants such as conferences. In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter will listen to the speaker and at the same time convey the interpreting to the audience. It requires a great deal of concentration, as the interpreter has very little time to absorb the information and relay it back to the listeners.
  2. Consecutive: Consecutive interpreting is more common among smaller meetings, such as a one-on-one meeting or an interview. In consecutive interpreting the interpreter will listen to the speaker, usually taking notes while the speaker is communicating, and when the speaker finishes a thought or pauses the linguist will communicate the interpreting to the listeners. This type gives the interpreter more time to listen but requires the interpreter to absorb a larger amount of information so he or she conveys it to the listeners.

Which type of interpreting is right for you?

When deciding whether you need consecutive or simultaneous interpreting, there are a few factors that you might want to consider.

If you are hosting a larger event or meeting, where time is an important factor, you might want to consider simultaneous interpreting. In simultaneous interpreting, there will be minimal time between the spoken sentence and the interpreting, which creates efficient communication between the parties.

On the other hand, if the meeting or event has fewer participants, and the accuracy of the interpreting is more important, consecutive interpreting might be the way to go. Take for example a medical consultation, or a courtroom proceeding, where the precision of the message is of the utmost importance. Consecutive interpreting gives room for the interpreter to articulate his or her message in the most accurate way possible.

If you are still unsure about which type of interpreting you need, contact us for a free consultation.

Conclusion

To sum up, successful multilingual business interactions heavily rely on effective communication where interpreting plays a pivotal role in bridging language gaps respectfully.

Language barriers can hinder significant business deals, collaborations, or discussions from progressing smoothly. Being assisted by a professional interpreter helps you overcome these challenges ensuring accurate interpreting which are culturally acceptable.

Interpreting enables seamless translations in real-time between languages thus allowing participants to direct their attention towards content without diverting focus due to linguistic struggles.

Interpreting ensures precise message conveyance while retaining nuances & intentions from the original speaker.

There is remote/on-site & simultaneous/consecutive interpreting catering to specific needs like event scale, time constraints, or need for precision. Accurate selection depends on various factors. Investing in professional interpretation services displays a practical solution & strategic
