For example, if your audience does not speak the same language as the speaker or if the conference is broadcasted live, you must have an interpreter present, whether simultaneous or consecutive. What is interpreting?

Interpreting is translating speech from one language to another at events such as conferences, conventions, or official speeches. An interpreter plays a very important role in the general understanding of what is being said as he/ she is the one delivering information to an audience.

1) What is simultaneous interpreting?

Simultaneous interpreting is often chosen for conferences or long speeches, as a lot of information is usually shared which allows for a much deeper understanding, especially as the translation is done in real time.

2) What is consecutive interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting is generally used at events where conversation is key, e.g. during negotiations, business meetings, or other events. The speaker leaves a pause so that the interpreter can translate from one language to another for the person(s) and vice versa.

THE 5 MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SIMULTANEOUS AND CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING

1) Continuous and deferred

Simultaneous interpreting: Simultaneous interpreting means that the speech delivered in the target language will be much more limited due to the fact that the translation is continuous.  Another advantage is that this type of translation runs in real time, even when the programme of your conference/event is busy.

Consecutive interpreting: Consecutive interpreting, however, gives the interpreter much more time to translate. He or she is able to detach themselves from the original speech which helps to avoid any literal translations or miscommunication. Nonetheless, this remains a very intense exercise as the original speech can last up to 15 minutes.

2) Equipment

Simultaneous interpreting: This type of interpreting requires a certain amount of equipment in order for it to run smoothly. It requires the use of an interpreting booth, a translation case, and headphones. The interpreting booth is soundproof and separated from the other interpreters. The interpreter then translates into a microphone (in real time) that broadcasts to the wireless headsets worn by the audience.

Consecutive interpreting: For Consecutive interpreting the interpreter does not need any translation equipment. Typically the interpreter stands close to the speaker(s) and does not use any special audio-video equipment. The only piece of equipment often used is a notebook.

3) Qualifications

At HI-COM, we only work with native speaking interpreters who have a relevant degree and more than 5 years’ experience in the desired industry. However, the qualifications required for both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting will vary.

For example, Simultaneous interpreters require extensive training in order to successfully hear and translate into another language instantly. The interpreter must therefore be fluent in both languages as well as fast and concise in order to convey the message accurately and in good time.

4) How it works

Simultaneous interpreting: Prior to an event, the simultaneous interpreter will receive information about the event in order to understand the context and have any necessary information to provide a consistent and accurate interpreting. During the event, the interpreter will sit in his/her booth and translate to the target audience in real time.

Consecutive interpreting: Unlike simultaneous interpreting, the consecutive interpreter does not receive information beforehand. During the event, the speaker will talk first and then give the interpreter time to translate what has been said. This is a much more complex task, which requires thorough note-taking and a very good memory.

5) Communication

Simultaneous interpreting: An advantage of using simultaneous interpreting is that there is fluent and continuous communication throughout a presentation or event.

Consecutive interpreting: A disadvantage of consecutive interpreting is that the interpreting flows a lot less than simultaneous interpreting. However, an advantage of this type of interpreting is that the interpreter’s speech will be much more controlled and carefully thought through than simultaneous interpreting. Consecutive interpreting avoids repetitions, misunderstandings, and any ambiguities that could cause problems for the listeners’ understanding.

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation. The global outbreak of Covid-19 has industries scrambling to adapt their business models around travel lockdowns and social distancing.

Industries relying on travel and face-to-face interactions are feeling this pressure acutely. As events and conferences are being cancelled and travel restrictions implemented globally, many industries have started moving online. Already, major sporting events and industry conferences have set up livestreams for their events, without live studio audiences.

Therefore, there is a shift to teleconferencing for meetings and livestreaming for events. But, the problem arises around how to translate through language barriers.

Traditionally, on-site translators allowed for seamless translations for attendees at the venue.

As conferences and events go online, the event management industry is starting to see remote simultaneous interpretation, or RSI, as an indispensable tool for putting on anything internationally oriented amidst the Covid-19 crisis.

A brief history of interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation was first officially introduced to the world during the Nuremburg trials (1945-1946). The tribunal was tasked with carrying out “fair and expeditious trials”. It makes it imperative that there was an efficient and precise translation system implemented.

With judges from Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the US presiding over the hearings of German Nazi war criminals, there were four different languages being used in the courtroom. The standard was a consecutive interpretation where interpreters translate after hearing the speaker finish an entire phrase/speech. But it would have been to slo for the job.

IBM offered to implement a simultaneous interpretation system for the trials. The setup consisted of interpreters sitting in an isolated booth and translating into their respective languages in real-time.

The translated audios were broadcast to headset receivers for participants in their respective languages. In this way, listeners were able to get a smooth experience and communicate clearly to each other.

However, you will encounter such on-site simultaneous interpretation setups, with minor upgrades to the technology, at any larger international conference.

However, as technology has progressed, the possibilities for more efficient simultaneous interpretation has too. The rise of faster internet and Wi-Fi meant livestreaming became possible as well as cloud computing. The universal adoption of personal smartphones and smart devices has the potential to make headsets redundant.

Enter remote simultaneous interpretation, RSI. By utilizing cloud computing power, livestreaming immediacy, and smartphone connectivity we have been able to move simultaneous interpretation online. Rendering the on-site aspect of interpretation unnecessary.

How does remote simultaneous interpretation work?

There may be many different setups and systems for RSI, but all follow the same logic:

• The speaker speaks in one language while their voice and image are livestreamed to remote interpreters.
• The interpreters hear and see the speaker on their own devices translates to the speaker’s words. 
• Each interpreter’s translated audio is transmitted to a central cloud-based RSI platform.
• Attendees connect to the RSI platform via their smartphones/Wi-Fi enabled devices. They choose their language of choice and see the speaker seamlessly speaking with translated audio.

Benefits of remote simultaneous interpretation

Even before the Covid-19 outbreak, on-site simultaneous interpretation at events was a costly but necessary part of the budget for international events.

In addition, event organizers had to track down interpreters knowledgeable about their event’s specific topics and the speakers’ fields of expertise, often needing to fly in specialized interpreters and provide room and board.

The introduction of remote simultaneous interpretation meant that event organizers now have access to a wider pool of interpreters at their fingertips, such as interpreters for rarer language pairs and more specific topics, without needing to deal with the issue of location. This results in cost savings of 30-40% when switching over to remote simultaneous interpretation.

HI-COM is proud to have provided English & Chinese simultaneous interpreting for the eighth VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagenbau/ German Mechanical Engineering Association) Mechanical Engineering Summit in China.

The 2019 edition of the Mechanical Engineering Summit was held at the beautiful Intercontinental Hotel, located in Shanghai’s Songjiang District on 30th October (from 9am-6pm), to implement the development and changes in the Mechanical Engineering industry in China.

HI-COM managed the whole project and provided expert interpreting services and equipment for 150 attendees at the summit. The project included two of our best interpreters, a transmitter, central control unit, interpreting machine, radiant plate and receiver, interpreting cabins, and a team to set up and take down the equipment.

During four full days, the interpreter provided by HI-COM, mastering both Chinese and English languages, followed Daxue Consulting’s staff in order to help and assist them during interviews at an automotive fair.

The various interviews were done with car users, about their habits, as well as their expectations in terms of equipment and comfort inside the car. The conversations were not so technical, but nevertheless a strong knowledge of vocabulary related to the car industry and daily car usage was required.
