What are the differences between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting

Are you organising a conference and would like an interpreter to translate a speech? How do you choose between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting?

Communication and interpreting at events are essential. For example, if your audience does not speak the same language as the speaker or if the conference is broadcasted live, you must have an interpreter present, whether simultaneous or consecutive. It is important that everyone present at the event fully understands what is being said as it will bring the audience together and help people to interact.

At HI-COM we fully understand the importance of a quality interpreter, which is why we first make sure that the type of interpreting will suit the needs of the business/event.

What is interpreting?

Interpreting is translating speech from one language to another at events such as conferences, conventions, or official speeches. An interpreter plays a very important role in the general understanding of what is being said as he/ she is the one delivering information to an audience.

Are you organising an event and need an interpreter but are unsure whether to choose simultaneous or consecutive interpreting?

HI-COM is here to highlight the differences to better help you make your choice!

1) What is simultaneous interpreting?

Simultaneous interpreting is often chosen for conferences or long speeches, as a lot of information is usually shared which allows for a much deeper understanding, especially as the translation is done in real time.

Simultaneous interpreting

2) What is consecutive interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting is generally used at events where conversation is key, e.g. during negotiations, business meetings, or other events. The speaker leaves a pause so that the interpreter can translate from one language to another for the person(s) and vice versa.

consecutive interpretation

THE 5 MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SIMULTANEOUS AND CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING

1) Continuous and deferred

Simultaneous interpreting: Simultaneous interpreting means that the speech delivered in the target language will be much more limited due to the fact that the translation is continuous.  Another advantage is that this type of translation runs in real time, even when the programme of your conference/event is busy.

Consecutive interpreting: Consecutive interpreting, however, gives the interpreter much more time to translate. He or she is able to detach themselves from the original speech which helps to avoid any literal translations or miscommunication. Nonetheless, this remains a very intense exercise as the original speech can last up to 15 minutes.

2) Equipment

Simultaneous interpreting: This type of interpreting requires a certain amount of equipment in order for it to run smoothly. It requires the use of an interpreting booth, a translation case, and headphones. The interpreting booth is soundproof and separated from the other interpreters. The interpreter then translates into a microphone (in real time) that broadcasts to the wireless headsets worn by the audience.

Consecutive interpreting: For Consecutive interpreting the interpreter does not need any translation equipment. Typically the interpreter stands close to the speaker(s) and does not use any special audio-video equipment. The only piece of equipment often used is a notebook.

conference interpreting

3) Qualifications

At HI-COM, we only work with native speaking interpreters who have a relevant degree and more than 5 years’ experience in the desired industry. However, the qualifications required for both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting will vary.

For example, Simultaneous interpreters require extensive training in order to successfully hear and translate into another language instantly. The interpreter must therefore be fluent in both languages as well as fast and concise in order to convey the message accurately and in good time.

4) How it works

Simultaneous interpreting: Prior to an event, the simultaneous interpreter will receive information about the event in order to understand the context and have any necessary information to provide a consistent and accurate interpreting. During the event, the interpreter will sit in his/her booth and translate to the target audience in real time.

Consecutive interpreting: Unlike simultaneous interpreting, the consecutive interpreter does not receive information beforehand. During the event, the speaker will talk first and then give the interpreter time to translate what has been said. This is a much more complex task, which requires thorough note-taking and a very good memory.

5) Communication

Simultaneous interpreting: An advantage of using simultaneous interpreting is that there is fluent and continuous communication throughout a presentation or event.

Consecutive interpreting: A disadvantage of consecutive interpreting is that the interpreting flows a lot less than simultaneous interpreting. However, an advantage of this type of interpreting is that the interpreter’s speech will be much more controlled and carefully thought through than simultaneous interpreting. Consecutive interpreting avoids repetitions, misunderstandings, and any ambiguities that could cause problems for the listeners’ understanding.

  • What is the definition of consecutive interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting can be carried out in a simple way as very little equipment is needed/used. This type of interpreting can be done in any place or environment.

Consecutive interpreting can be arranged quite easily as the interpreter does not need any special training prior to the event as he/he already has the relevant qualifications.

  • What are the advantages of consecutive interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting requires the interpreter to listen to the speech and note down the context and any other information provided, in extremely intricate detail.

The interpreter must listen to the speech as carefully as possible and note down only what he or she thinks is important to ensure that the final interpreting is as accurate as possible. The challenge of consecutive interpreting lies in the interpreter’s ability to accurately memorize what is said and the notes that are taken.

Typically, the speaker will talk for about ten minutes in his or her own language before the interpreter rephrases the speech and delivers it in the desired language. For example, a French-English interpreter might listen to a speech in English before delivering it in French.

  • Why use HI-COM for your consecutive interpreting?

HI-COM has lots of experience in multilingual communication in a variety of events, such as meetings, product launches, and presentations.

Our interpreters have:

  • Degrees in simultaneous interpreting from world-renowned universities
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in their industry
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in interpreting at public affairs events
  • The ability to adapt quickly and are presentable

These qualities are extremely important to us here at HI-COM, because we want to be able to offer high-quality interpretings to all of our customers.

  • Which qualities should a consecutive interpreter possess?

Good consecutive interpreters must have professional training and be able to:

1) Listen (understand)

2) Analyse (take structured notes)

3) Rephrase any core messages (communicate)

As a multilingual expert, at HI-COM we offer professional translation and interpreting and writing services in over 40 different languages. We are an international translation agency based in Shanghai. We specialise in the Chinese market, but have clients all over the world.

The future of interpreting in China over the next 10 years https://www.hicom-asia.com/what-do-you-think-of-the-ten-major-trends-of-interpreting-development-in-the-next-ten-years-in-china/ Fri, 28 Aug 2020 06:31:44 +0000 https://www.hicom-asia.com/?p=16896 interpreting in china 2030

interpreting in china 2030

Like many industries, the interpreting market has also been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This encourages us to question the kind of development and changes we can expect the interpreting market to face in the future, or more specifically, over the next 10 years.

  • By 2030, machine interpreting will account for half of all interpreting activities. Machine interpreting is suitable for customized application scenarios and customer groups and is characterized by its low price and unlimited supply. It is powered by artificial intelligence technology such as big data, speech recognition, and natural language processing, which is expected to cause a decline in the manual interpreting market.

Translators with a translation level inferior to that of machines and those who are unable to keep up with today’s technology will be gradually replaced in the market. However, manual interpreters with a unique personality or interesting style will be favored over translation machines.

For example, according to previous trends, clients much prefer interpreters with different styles and characteristics so that manual interpreting is not all the same.

  • It is expected that the business model of translation companies will change, and the intermediary model will become more difficult to sustain. Platformization and verticalization are both major trends.

Today, it is becoming easier to obtain interpreting resources. The single intermediary competition mode cannot provide customers with more differentiated value. Platformization makes it more difficult to be replaced by integrating more key elements in the value chain. Verticalization cultivates certain high-growth and high-value industries to establish higher competition barriers.

  • It is likely that more interpreters will set up their own translation studios or translation companies, and create new partnerships. Whilst interpreters without a brand are becoming more unsustainable, and will only be able to survive by lowering its prices.

In the next decade, it is very likely that the demand for interpretations between China and the United States will decrease. However, as China expands its international influence, it will bring new demands – gradually increasing the overall demand in this industry.

  • It is expected that the 2020 pandemic will have a lasting impact on the global interpreting market for at least two years. In the course of these two years, it is likely that more than half of all freelance interpreters will transition into other industries.

Due to interpretation and translation services covering such a wide range of industries, it is likely they will both be affected by the downward economic spiral, whilst the contrast between supply and demand will become more prominent.

However, because it is a cyclical industry, there will be a period of recession. The companies and individuals who have been developing within the interpreting market for a long time will find that the recession is a good time for layout.

All interpreters and translation companies that survive the pandemic will benefit from the next “boom”.

  • As the trend of verticalization becomes more obvious (translators involved in certain sub-fields will benefit), more non-foreign language, translation majors, and freelance translators from other professional fields will join the market.

In the future, interpreters who lack professional background will face greater challenges.interpreting china 2030

  • Affected by the pandemic, online remote interpreting is gradually becoming more popular for customers around the world. Even after the pandemic is over, it is very likely that online remote interpreting will continue to be an option for customers.

As a result of the pandemic, online conferences and foreign guests attending remote speeches in the conference and exhibition industry has been encouraged. Whilst another reason for this increase in remote interpreting is due to the convenience of not having to commute.

  • As a result of the internet, more and more post-90s and post-00s translators will change the traditional thinking of the older generation and become cross-border youths.

young interpreter in china

Therefore, you should make use of their experience in the field of interpreting, and expand their abilities via training to challenge the traditional profit model of “hourly workers” who rely on only selling time to get paid.

  • Due to the gradual expansion of the remote interpreting market and the high housing prices and living costs in first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, the idea that quality translators in China will only be located in these first-tier cities will be challenged over the next 10 years.

New first-tier and second-tier cities with lower housing prices and goods prices will attract more young interpreters and improve the shortage of excellent offline interpreters. For conferences held in non-first-tier cities, higher quality interpreting services can be obtained at a lower cost, and the gap between cities will gradually narrow.

In the next 10 years, a group of senior translators will retire or upgrade to work in higher-level fields, and the interpreting market will be the post-90s world, followed by the post-00s.

The general historical law is that after the economic crisis, science and technology will usher in new development and greatly improve production efficiency, thus promoting economic recovery.

It can also be predicted that within the next 10 years, science and technology explode, and the following sub-sectors of science and technology will be studied and researched. This will include fields such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, 5G, semiconductors, new energy vehicles, biomedicine, unmanned aerial vehicles, smart cities, cloud computing, big data, industrial Internet of Things, and smart homes.

However, industries can’t develop without money and business, therefore, it is necessary for interpreters to learn about finance and business.

interpretation en période épidémique

By reviewing the industries and occupations affected by the COVID-19 situation, it is clear that the exhibition and interpreting industries have been greatly affected. What are the biggest trends in the industry today? Here is what we found out!

1. Online interpretation as a possible growth point

In order to fight COVID-19, all people are “social distancing”, and foreign contacts are bearing the brunt of the issue. Judging from the current development trend of the global epidemic situation, it is very difficult to resume overseas visits in August this year. If other countries and regions cannot control the epidemic situation or continue to tighten policies because of the fear of a second outbreak, international exchanges are unlikely to resume before the end of this year. In such a case, there will no chance of seeing a normal resumption in interpreting activities. Simultaneous interpreting and high-level international conferences can only be performed online. Not only can online interpreting ensure “social distancing” perfectly, but it can also expand the scope of customer screening and save on the travel and accommodation expenses paid to interpreters. At present, the main constraints of online interpretation are technology, equipment and signal delay. If these problems can be solved, it will no doubt be popular in the future.

Learn more about Remote Interpreting.

2. Online interpretation teaching ushers in new opportunities

Many offline education organizations have had to close down because of the coronavirus. Online education is favored by students because it breaks time and space constraints. It is also convenient, efficient, and versatile. However, what follows is that interpretation trainers may experience the “Matthew effect”, meaning that the more powerful, famous, well-known and experienced teachers are, the more likely they are to attract students, while those who are not high-level, unknown or not good at online teaching will be eliminated from the market.

3. The field of interpretation has shifted to biomedicine, high technology and so on

Influenced by the coronavirus, both officials and ordinary people have become more aware of biomedicine, high technology related to COVID 19, and new technologies such as AI and 5G that have changed our lifestyle. We are not ruling out the prevention and control of the epidemic situation after the outbreak, and are organizing various seminars and meetings in related fields. Those who are interested can accumulate knowledge and experience in these fields from now on.

4. Interpreters must learn to update their skills

Regarding the work of freelancers, during the epidemic period, some have had the frustrating experience of having to stay at home and wait for work. Some have begun to take up translation work due to the lack of interpreting opportunities. Some have started remote interpretation and live network teaching. After the epidemic, some interpreters who have struggled to keep up with the new technology and new situation will be gradually left behind, while those who change their thoughts in time and keep up with the development of the situation will stay in the running.

The epidemic will eventually be over, but it has unconsciously changed the way we live, work and study, making it impossible for us to go back to the past. So be smart, and act now to seize those opportunities!

INTER

HUAWEI CONNECT is an integrated conference for the global ICT ecosystem. Over 15000 industry leaders came together to Shanghai to envision a Better Connected World, welcome the smart society, and shape the digital transformation of industries. The largest industry gathering in Huawei’s history, HUAWEI CONNECT combines Huawei’s Cloud Congress, Network Congress, and Developer’s Congress into a single dynamic event.

We have provided the Simultaneous Interpretation Material for the 30,000 attendees for this events.

The biggest challenge of the project is to ensure good SI signals to cover the whole venue. Due to fire protection regulations, installation of infrared panels can be challenging. The project required a number of tests, adjustments and coordination actions. Finally, 70 infrared panels were successfully installed with additional equipment in place to strengthen the signal.

CONGRATULATIONS to HUAWEI and all the partners who have been working hard to make the event a great success.
